Bats Alive! Saints Win!

(From May 7)

After a gut-wrenching rain-out on Tuesday, the Saints trekked to Independent Presbyterian with red hot bats and a lot of pent-up energy as they rolled to a 16-2 Opening Day win.

The shade-seeking crowd was treated to a batting clinic as Nino started the hit parade with a screamer to SS and the Saints proceeded to execute station-to-station baseball at its finest. The lumber didn't come to a rest until T-Dog belted a RBI single to right in the fourth inning, essentially ending the game with the second six-run mercy rule. (A third six-run mercy rule would have certainly been called in the third inning, but the bats were mistakenly taken out of the hands of the Saints after only two outs.)

The Saints recorded 30 at-bats, hammered 22 hits (.733), plated 16 runs and only whiffed seven times.

Independent Presbyterian recorded 15 at-bats, two hits, two runs and 10 whiffs.

The opening day victory was marred by only two blemishes: both of the opposing team's runs should have been singles to right. However, on both plays the ball managed to squirt past the right fielder and a quarter was quickly inserted into the Merry-Go-Round. Around the bases the runners scooted.

The first miscue was a hard hit ball and the runner scored legitimately before the Angel in the outfield could retrieve the ball and relay it back to the infield.

The second time was reminiscent of the 1976 Bad News Bears and it made Coach Overstreet want to pull a Coach Buttermaker and slam two or three boilermakers to dull his senses. Once the right fielder retrieved the ball, he overthrew the cutoff man. The shortstop chased the ball down and then chucked it to third, where the third baseman got no leather on the ball as it rolled harmfully into the dugout -- thereby awarding the runner home plate.

If you are scoring at home, sports fans, that is a single to right (19), E9 sends the runner to second; E9 sends the runner to third; and E6 sends the runner home.

The Good Guys only had four chances to field the ball tonight and they successfully made two putouts. A .500 fielding percentage is not going to cut it, but rumor has it that the coaching staff is going to get that average up to .750 or higher by season's end.

Great game by all. All the boys hustled and played hard. All of them deserve knuckle bumps, high fives and enthusiastic slaps on the rear.

See you Saturday morning at 8:30 at Snowden Field, weather permitting.

Game highlights:

The top of the order gripped it and ripped it with Nino, Owen, Harris, Zach and Whit all going 3 for 3.

Nino, Owen, Harris and Zach scored 12 of the 16 runs

Whit drove in a team high four runs.

Sonny drove in three runs.

Wendell was hot in the nine hole, going 2 for 2 with a ribbie.

Hat tips to both T-Dog and Berent -- both struck out in their first at bat, but both shook it off and came back to record hits in their next at bat.
