(From April 17)
Hey studs,
Excellent job out there today -- your improvement is impressive. Everybody is really doing a great job.
Reminder: our next practice is at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Snowden Field, weather permitting. (There's a strong possibility of rain this weekend, so I will try to e-mail you ASAP if we must cancel; otherwise, don't hesitate to call me at 497-0389.)
Here are a few highlights from today's scrimmage:
The most thrilling play in baseball is a triple, but I think a close second is a dinger from Sonny. He roped a ball down the 3B line that was pretty clearly a HR from the time it left the bat. And watching Sonny leg it out was pure baseball joy. Great hustle, Sonny.
Zach was quick as a cat on the mound, making the first two put-outs of the game with clean fielding and accurate throws to 1B. While everybody digs the long ball (and offense in general), defense is the key to this game.
Speaking of fantastic defense, Thomas Walk (T-Dog) made a textbook backhand in RF on a screamer off Avery's bat. It was such a beautiful backhand that T-Dog had to stop and point out that it was precisely like the drills we have been working on in practice. Indeed, that's why we do the drills. Once the crossover step, the drop, step and run technique and the backhand become second nature, you will be amazed at the plays you will pull off.
If you want to learn how to beat a throw to 1B, watch Wendell leg out an infield hit. Again, a great textbook effort, particularly that final stretch to the bag.
Berent -- still smarting from a hard grounder off his chin during last week's scrimmage -- cleanly fielded another bad hopping grounder AND had the presence of mind to get the force out at 2B.
Of course, everybody contributed in important ways, which is really what the coaches and parents take pride in -- watching everybody take the techniques learned in practice and apply them in a game-like setting. Excellent play by all.
Pray for no rain and we'll see you Saturday,
James
